Last week, The Cairo High School One Act Competition Team brought home their third consecutive region championship with their rendition of Once Upon A Mattress, Youth Edition. Competing against them for the Region 1-AAA title were Bainbridge, Peach County, Dougherty, and Monroe high schools; the additional region school Westover did not compete in this event.

The team received high scores with an average of 96.5 between the three judges. Some notable commentary from the judging panel included, “so many string ensemble moments”, “you all work well together, I can tell you enjoy working with each other”, and “I was engaged the entire time, excellent job!”

In addition to bringing home the overall title, the team also brought back three individual awards for specific performers. Nikia Wood who plays “The Jester” was awarded with an All Star Cast medal. Jakin Ross, who plays “King Sextimus the Silent” brought home his second consecutive All Star Cast Award. Aubrey Whigham was awarded with Best Actress in Region for her portrayal of Queen Aggravain; this is the fourth consecutive year that a Cairo High School student has won this specific award.

The team heads to Cambridge High School in Milton, GA on Saturday, November 22nd to face off against seven other region champions for the state title. Mrs. Austin Harrell is unsure, but believes that this might be the first time in CHS history that a third consecutive region win has occurred for One Act Play; she also notes that it has been exactly 60 years since Cairo last brought home the state One Act Play title in 1965.
